IMPORTANT UPCOMING EVENTS

Field Trip was a SUCCESS!
The Penguin Team took a FIELD TRIP to the Spurlock Museum on campus at the University of Illinois on this week. It was a great learning experience with hands-on activities, some story-telling, and a rousing game of Jeopardy. Everyone had a wonderful time and we thank the parents who came and assisted with the trip.

MIDTERM IS HERE!
As with every passing quarter, we once again have a COUPON incentive for mid-term. Students must have NO Ds or Fs as overall grades, NO unserved detention time, and NO DRs by Wednesday, February 1st. Students who meet this deadline and qualify will receive COUPONS on Friday, February 3rd. There will be ONE "free" hall pass and ONE "free" homework pass. These two coupons will expire by the end of the quarter and may be used in any of the three core classes.

MIDTERM grades will be submitted by Tuesday, February 7th and will be sent in the mail that same week.
As always, you may check your child's grades online at any time. Checking online will also enable you to see if they are missing any assignments, have major grades they can re-take, and other further details about your child's progress in school.

6th grade INCENTIVE Schedule

Every year the 6th grade teachers plan "Incentives" for students at each mid-term and Quarter grade entry. We want to encourage, honor, and reward those students who have worked hard to turn in their work, bring up their grades, and achieve those As, Bs, and Cs! We also want to honor those students who have remained DR-free and have completed any detention time received. Incentive activities, deadlines for qualifications, and dates can be found by downloading the document below.

Needed Supplies and 3-ring Binder
As the school year begins, your child needs several supplies in order to be prepared and successful.

To see a list of needed supplies follow this link: http://www.champaignschools.org/schools/22/files/school_supply_list.pdf

Once your child has all the supplies needed, they should organize their 3-inch binder.
The 8 divider tabs should be organized according to their class schedule.
For example, their 1st tab should be labeled with their 1st hour class (i.e. "Math" or "Science" or "ELA"). Their 2nd tab should be their 2nd hour class, and their 3rd tab should be their 3rd hour class.
Depending on the rest of their day, students should have an "Encore" tab and a "Flex" or "AVID" tab.

***Students in Band/Strings will NOT have a tab for "Flex" or "AVID" and do NOT need a tab for Band/Strings.***

***Students also do NOT need a tab for "P.E." or for "Health."***

Extra tabs can be labeled according to your child's organizational needs. Suggestions include a tab for "Paper" and a tab for "Homework" with a folder behind this tab -- one pocket side labled "To Do at Home" and the other pocket side labeled "To Turn In." Other tab ideas are "Miscellaneous" or "Handouts for Home."

CHECK your child's binder and BE SURE it is organized. Help them label tabs if they need help. Make sure there are NO loose papers. Provide a pencil pouch to keep pencils, a hand-held sharpener, extra eraser, red pens, and hole-enforcers, etc.

Math Tabs and Organization
Your child also needs 5 divider tabs for Math.

These should be placed behind their "Math" tab and organized as follows:
1st tab  -- Inv/NOTES
2nd tab -- ACE HW
3rd tab -- Other WS - or - HW WS
4th tab -- Quizzes/Tests - or - Major Grades
5th tab -- Resources
